Brief Drink Driving Intervention

The Mission’s educational programme to address drink driving behaviour is currently being delivered at Community Corrections sites in Timaru, Dunedin, Gore and Invercargill. The programme is six-hours long and includes a variety of interesting teaching tools, including hands-on driving simulators and impairment goggles that replicate the experience of intoxication at various blood alcohol levels. The programme educates participants on the effects and dangers of substance use and driving, promotes positive attitudes towards avoiding impaired driving and creates practical plans to help participants avoid future drink driving behaviour.

Outcomes for Participants:

  • Improved self-awareness of the impact of substance use
  • Improved understanding of the mental, physical and behavioral effects of substance use
  • Improved understanding of safe drinking limits
  • Improved understanding of the risks and consequences of impaired driving
  • Anticipation of unplanned and emergency drink driving challenges and reduced reliance on impaired / spontaneous decision making
  • Practical drink driving prevention strategies that utilise existing resources

BDDI is funded by the Department of Corrections.
